Kata literally means shape or form. Kata are pre-arranged forms demonstrating methods of attack, defense and counter attack. The number of movements and their sequence are specifically arranged to balance offensive and defensive techniques while direction, flow of movement, and stances work to give each kata a distinct character.
Kata is as difficult and as beautiful as a complicated dance, as forceful as an acrobatic exercise. It is used in the development of the Karate practitioner for their effectiveness in developing the essential characteristics of concentration, balance, and breath control.
Every movement of the kata has a specific purpose. It represents an attack, block, or throw against a definite move by an imaginary element. A kata is judged not only on the force and speed of the movement but also on each turn of the hand and movement of the head and the body.
Kata develops one's balance, grace, speed, agility, flexibility, reflex, strength, and a desired mental attitude. The various stances alone can provide a beneficial exercise.
